HOUSE ON A HILL

This home was thoughtfully designed in response to the unique challenges and opportunities presented by its site; a steep, east-facing hillside lot that had long proven difficult to develop. The natural grade descends approximately 50 feet over a span of 250 feet, with the upper portion featuring a moderate slope that transitions into a significantly steeper incline toward the lower half. At the base of the lot, protected wetlands define the exterior setback, further constraining the buildable area.

Despite these limitations, the site offers distinct advantages. Elevated views extend above surrounding rooftops and treetops, creating a dramatic visual connection to the landscape beyond. These views became a defining element in the design approach.

The architectural solution embraces the topography, using the slope to inform a multi-level layout that steps naturally with the land. This strategy not only minimizes site disturbance but also maximizes exposure to natural light and views. The result is a home that feels integrated with its environment—both in form and function—while celebrating the site’s inherent beauty and complexity.
